What Do You Tell Parents About Why Their Child Is Pretending Not to See?

There they are in the waiting room: Molly Malinger and her worried mom. The call from the school nurse had been a total shock to her parents. Molly Malinger can’t see!! When a child pretends not to see, it is called Functional Visual Loss (FVL), which is fictitious or exaggerated decrease of vision for secondary gain. While adults usually feign blindness for monetary gain, children usually do it because of stress in their lives, either internal or external. FVL certainly gains attention.
