Does Refractive Error Influence Visual Acuity in Early Development?

Grating acuity was assessed binocularly and monocularly by the acuity card procedure in 97 normal children and 14 patients with ocular disorders. All children underwent eye examination with cycloplegic retinoscopy. Data from normal children confirmed the development of grating acuity shown by other studies. Patients with different ocular disorders, showed grating acuity outside the normal range, as expected.
Refraction findings were in line with other studies. Astigmatism data, however, differed from previous reports since the type of astigmatism most frequently found was with-the-rule axis (93% of the astigmatic eyes).
The lack of correlation between refractive error and visual acuity already reported was confirmed here with cycloplegic retinoscopy-a more precise technique than near retinoscopy.
