Tricks and Traps in the Diagnosis and Management of Amblyopia Paula M. Edelman, C.O.
The diagnosis of amblyopia in preverbal children requires patience and careful observation. Fixation preference testing and the Ten Prism Diopter test, when used correctly, can be quick and highly accurate methods of assessing even small differences in visual acuity between the two eyes. The mode of treatment chosen is determined by the severity of amblyopia, the age of the patient, the presence or absence of strabismus, and the refractive error. Occlusion and penalization are both effective methods. Prognosis for recovery of vision depends on the age of onset, the duration of the visual deprivation, and the age at which treatment is begun.
