Diagnosis and Management of Diplopia in Thyroid Eye Disease

Malcolm L. Mazow, M.D.

An exhaustive number of papers is in the literature regarding the diagnosis of thyroid eye disease. These papers encompass the patient with ocular problems of thyrotoxicosis, post thyroid therapy and ocular involvement from the auto immune process, ocular Graves disease, as well as hypothyroidism, both the primary type and Hashimoto disease. Therapeutic interventions including medical and surgical management are covered in great detail in the literature.

This present work will only deal with understanding diplopia and its management in patients with the ocular involvement of thyroid eye disease. In addition, it will address the questions when is the time for intervention and what are the findings suggesting the mode of therapy needed to eliminate the diplopia?
