The Potential for Binocular Vision in Constant Exotropia

Joseph H. Goldstein, M.D., Barbara B. Schneekloth, C.O.

This report describes a series of ten patients with (1) constant exotropia, (2) no history of straight eyes or no alignment for many years and (3) no preoperative evidence of potential for binocular vision. Examination after surgery demonstrated the presence of fusion in nine of ten cases. The potential for binocular vision in constant exotropia, therefore, may be quite good despite the lack of positive findings on preoperative testing.
