Surgical Pearls for the Management of Exotropia

Pearls in the management of exotropia with respect to surgical technique are essentially no different than surgical pearls for the treatment of any strabismic entity. Surgery should be done carefully and safely. Do not perforate the globe, control bleeding adequately, and handle tissues gently. The real pearls that are unique to the management of exotropia relate to the specific decisions as to which operation should be performed, and how much surgery to do. In most cases, the surgical decision is based upon the basic angle of misalignment obtained at six meters. There are certain situations in which one should modify this approach. Also, there are important considerations with respect to optical correction in the management of patients with exotropia.
