Assessing Visual Acuity of Visually Impaired Children Using the Teller Acuity Card Procedure

The Teller Acuity Card Procedure is a simple, subjective method of assessing visual acuity in pre-verbal children. Its usefulness has been demonstrated in populations where other available techniques would be difficult or impossible. However, its use in assessing children who are visually impaired may require special procedures. It is important to use appropriate techniques to enhance each child's optimal visual functioning and encourage cooperation.

This paper presents specific methods and techniques that are effective in testing children whose diagnoses include: strabismus, extremely low vision, nystagmus, and neurological impairment.
