Guidelines for Increasing Compliance in Occlusion Therapy for Amblyopia

Esther A. Goldstein, Ph.D., Zvi Tessler, M.D.

Occlusion through patching is the preferred method for treating amblyopia. Noncompliance to the patching regimen is a frequently documented problem. In the event of noncompliance, physicians often resort to alternative, less effective, procedures. A practical program for encouraging compliance is recommended as a complementary facet of the medical treatment of amblyopia. Guidelines for enhancing compliance to patching emphasizing principles of behavior modification are described.
